Desktop Virtualization Products

Tables below will help you identify most popular desktop virtualization products which are available today. Most of those I installed once and worked with them for a while. The choice is there and based on your requirements you can download and install the solution.

Icon-WarningIf you are new than I would recommend to install VMWare Player and get started with downloading a appliance from VMWare’s Virtual Appliance Marketplace. Good choice to start with is the Browser Appliance that allows you to browse the Internet securely using Mozilla Firefox, running under Ubuntu Linux 5.10, optimized for browsing; for more details click here.

I personally would download and install VMWare Workstation. As an IT Professional VMWare Workstatations offer special features like:

  • 64bit virtual machine support
  • Snapshot Manager
  • ESX server installation and testing
  • Exchange Server 2007 64bit installation and testing
VMWare Workstation is perfect when you need to create test environments and prepare the vm’s to be imported into VMWare ESX production servers/clusters. VMWare Workstation can easily be installed on your laptop and you can take your complete test environment and go to the customer and show them the result or solution you created at your office. Being able to quickly setup a test environment and test it with all features you would have on a physical server but with all advantages like easy backups, snapshots, etc.
