SCVMM 2007: Setup fails with error 2917

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 has been available for a while, and I have been testing it for two months.

When installing SCVMM 2007 manually, the Virtual Machine Manager 2007 Server Setup wizard may stop just before it finishes. I have also seen errors in the SCVMM 2007 VHD appliance available from Microsoft's website: jobs fail, and Virtual Machine Manager reports incorrect network paths.

In this case, setup failed because the computer name contained '-'. I had named the server REF-SCVMM-01, and setup failed with error ID 2917.

• The network path was not found on the REF-SCVMM-01. Ensure that the share name provided maps to a valid local path, and then try the operation again. ID: 2917. Details: The network path was not found.

The PowerShell scripts were not reading the computername variable correctly. I renamed the computer to REF_SCVMM_01, and setup finished successfully.
