Software deployment: Deploy Adobe Flash Player

Originally published Last updated

The following recipe helped me create an enterprise deployment script for Adobe Flash Player. I plan to use it in an SCCM task sequence targeting Windows 7 Enterprise clients. The command lines can also be used with other software deployment solutions.

Requirements

Script

Code2 lines

2
taskkill /f /im iexplore.exe
msiexec /i install_flash_player_10.2_active_x.msi /q

I used taskkill to stop all Internet Explorer processes. Inform users before running the script, because it will close their Internet Explorer sessions. I also renamed the MSI file to keep track of the Adobe Flash Player source version.

Disable automatic updates

After installing the latest version of Adobe Flash Player, Automatic Updates defaults to a weekly check. Flash Player checks for the latest version when a Flash file is opened. You can disable automatic updates in the Global Notifications Settings panel, but this is a user setting. I previously handled this by customizing Default User in the Windows 7 image. Sometimes, however, the profile becomes corrupt and the Adobe Flash update prompt appears.

To disable automatic updates for all users, deploy an administrator configuration file.

For Windows 7, I created a text file named mms.cfg in C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash.

Code1 line
1
AutoUpdateDisable=1

After adding this file, I no longer had to worry about users contacting the helpdesk to ask whether they should update Flash Player. Copy or create the file during the Adobe Flash Player deployment.
