Since the release of Windows 7 and enhancements in the disk management I now see the possibility to replace TrueCrypt. <strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Why should I replace TrueCrypt?<\/h3>\n<p>The reason is simple. I am working with a managed Windows 7 client and I don&#8217;t want to load non standard software on my client. There are certain &#8220;Computer Use Policy&#8221; in place and using <strong>Bitlocker<\/strong> to encrypt the data is out of the box available to me.<\/p>\n<h3>How to encrypt a portable Bitlocker files?<\/h3>\n<p>Well I would create a VHD fixed disk and encrypt this virtual volume with Bitlocker to Go. Note: before you start please make sure you are running <em><strong>Windows 7 Enterprise<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Windows 7 Ultimate<\/strong><\/em> version<\/p>\n<p>Start <strong>Computer Management<\/strong><br \/>Click <strong>Disk Management<\/strong> and right click<br \/>Click <strong>Create VHD <br \/><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_thumb.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"172\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enter the VHD filename and location; the Virtual disk size and set the format to fixed size. The disk will be encrypted so you need to set it fixed. Click <strong>OK<\/strong>. <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_thumb_3.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"398\" height=\"380\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New volume is created now. Please initialize the disk, create new SIMPLE volume, choose drive letter and format it as NTFS. <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_thumb_4.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"505\" height=\"103\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After following the steps new disk should appear in Windows Explorer.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_thumb_5.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"502\" height=\"105\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Go to Windows Explorer and right click on the new created drive. Choose <strong>Turn on Bitlocker\u2026<\/strong> <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_thumb_6.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"351\" height=\"160\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Check <strong>Use a password to unlock the drive<\/strong> and type your password. Click <strong>Next<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Windows7UseBitlockertoGoasreplacementfor_F550\/image_thumb_7.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"640\" height=\"495\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Save the recovery key to a secure location. I would recommend to print it out and keep this somewhere offsite! I am not going to work with this VHD on other operating systems like OSX or Linux.
