VMWare virtual disk (vmdk)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I copied one of my Windows XP <strong>virtual machine<\/strong> running on a VMWare Server 1.02 system locally to my workstation. After the files were copied I opened the vmx file with VMWare Workstation 6 and received the following error below after trying to start the virtual machine. The virrtual machine contained one snapshot on the VMWare Server.<\/p>\n<div class=\"messageBox error icon\"><span>Cannot open the disk &#8216;C:\\VM-machines\\Windows XP-001\\Windows XP Professional-000001.vmdk&#8217; or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. <strong>Reason: Failed to lock the file.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Failedtolockthefilevirtualdiskvmdk_DFB9\/clip_image002.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image002\" width=\"376\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Locate the virtual machine in Windows Explorer and delete any <strong>.lck <\/strong>folders<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/FailedtolockthefileVMWarevirtualdiskvmdk_C1CF\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/FailedtolockthefileVMWarevirtualdiskvmdk_C1CF\/image_thumb.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"504\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Start the virtual machine. If boot process will fail, try to Map the virtual hard disk to Z:\\ for example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/FailedtolockthefileVMWarevirtualdiskvmdk_C1CF\/image_3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/FailedtolockthefileVMWarevirtualdiskvmdk_C1CF\/image_thumb_3.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"504\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/Failedtolockthefilevirtualdiskvmdk_DFB9\/clip_image008.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"clip_image008\" width=\"240\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then disconnect the virtual hard disk and tried again. The virtual machine boot without any problem and my snapshot was still valid.
