I prefer to start from scratch when doing OS or other application installs.<\/p>\n<p>For a while I wanted to upgrade my development SQL Server 2005. The server is running for 3 years now on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64bit virtual machine.<\/p>\n<p>I performed SQL Server 2008 R2 installation and for most parts it was successful. SQL Server Agent service was not updated and it failed to start. I tried to run the &#8220;Repair&#8221; option but it didn&#8217;t fix the issue. I fixed this by searching for the executable and changing registry path to the new folder location.<\/p>\n<p>All database were running and applications connecting to them worked fine. My next step was to update SQL Server 2008 R2 to &#8220;Cumulative Update package 2&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2072493\"><span style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline;\">http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2072493<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After starting the setup I go following error message:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/061612_1745_SQLServer201.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>SQL Server Setup Failure:<\/h3>\n<div class=\"messageBox error icon\"><span>SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:<\/p>\n<p>A Failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair For instance &#8216;MSSQLSERVER&#8217; during configuration for features [SQL_Replication_Core_Inst,SQL_Engine_Core_Inst,MPT_AGENT_CORE_CNI,]. In order to apply this patch package (KB2072493), you must resolve any issues with the previous operation that failed. View the summary.txt log to determine why the previous operation failed.<\/p>\n<p>Error code 0x84B20001.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>I found on Microsoft forums and other posts to look for these registry entries:<\/p>\n<p>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Microsoft SQL Server\\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\\ConfigurationState<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MPT_AGENT_CORE_CNI<\/li>\n<li>SQL_Engine_Core_Inst<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>SQL_Replication_Core_Inst<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All REG_DWORD values were set to 3 and changed them to 1.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/061612_1745_SQLServer202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"122\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I started the SQL Server 2008 R2 update again and now the setup validation succeed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/061612_1745_SQLServer203.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"654\" height=\"462\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result &#8220;Your SQL Server 2008 R2 update operation is complete&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.networknet.nl\/apps\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/061612_1745_SQLServer204.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"661\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not sure if this is supported solution by Microsoft.
