Two years ago I switched from a PC to a Mac. I have three Macs running as my workstation system, a portable MacBook and a multimedia Mac Mini. Last week I realized it was time to do some upgrade to improve the performance of my iMac and Mac Mini. Both systems were slow. I never reinstalled these systems before with a fresh installation of Mac OS X. The only solution I had was to upgrade the memory. My main reasons for upgrading the memory: My iMac 24″ (Early 2009) run on 4GB and Mac Mini (Late 2009) run on 2GB of RAM. Last year I checked for official Apple memory upgrade but the price wasn’t reasonable to spend (>$150) and I postponed that until last week. To illustrate my frustration I created a screenshot of my “Activity Monitor”. As you can see Aperture 3 and Safari are running. These two applications are high demanding but imagine that Photoshop and Firefox were running. When developing websites I use Firefox and Photoshop in parallel, so unworkable situation. I have 160MB Free and 820MB Swap used. Sure there is something available in the Inactive area but for me not enough to wait for. With Mac OS X Lion, the System Information utility ( / About this Mac / More Information / Memory) has been updated and now it has clear guidance what to do for memory upgrade instructions. Click on Memory Upgrade Instructions and locate your mac. I am running an iMac 24″ ...

I am working on a redesign project for a CMSMadeSimple website and today I planned to upgrade the version. The website is running for two years and until today no updates have been installed. CMSMadeSimple version 1.4 “Jamaica” has just been released and because I want to add couple of new CMSMadeSimple modules I will first need to get the version up to date. The process is really straight forward and it took me 15 minutes in total. Download the latest version from here–> cmsmadesimple-1.4-full.tar.gz Extract the file with 7z and upload the content to your webserver by using ftp, sftp, ssh. I am using WinSCP to the files to my linux box. I dragged the files from left pane (my c drive) to right pane where the current CMSMadeSimple files were located. At some point I was asked to overwrite files and I clicked yes. Go to your admin page. I have couple of warnings I need to solve like removing the install directory and the “Site Down for Maintainance” message but most important is that you perfom the CMSMS schema upgrade. Click Start Upgrade Process. Verify your config.php is writable. I checked my config file from ssh console and the permissions were not configured as required. root@ubuntu-jeos-7:/var/www/cmsmadesimple-1.2.5/hubo-roneijgelsheim/site# ls config.php -all-rw-r–r– 1 root root 5829 2008-08-06 10:16 config.php To fix this problem I executed: chmod 777 config.php; chown www-data config.php and chgrp www-data config.php I went back and click “Try Again” in the Upgrade System wizard. The schema version was ...

After fixing my Active Directory I start the upgrade of my current Exchange 2007 server. As you will see from the screenshots below the installation is straight forward but the requirements are killing me with this service pack upgrade. First of all make sure a) your Active Directory replication is working properly, b) Exchange 2007 server has been installed with Windows Server 2003 SP2 and c) Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 has been installed. To complete these requirements as posted before I was forced to remove one of my domain controllers running in a virtual machine with dcpromo /forceremoval and metadata cleanup; this box did not replicate for three months. You can also upgrade from command line. I used gui mode to illustrate the process. Setup.com /mode:upgrade Check the hyperlink at Technet for all updates within SP1 What’s New in Exchange Server 2007 SP1. I like to integration with Windows Server 2008 and Exchange 2007 Sp1, Exchange Management console updates and the OWA premium changes.

Today I installed my first Windows Server 2008 Core server. This new server should act as Active Directory Domain Controller. Windows Server 2008 release introduces Core Server concept. I wanted to learn more about Core Server and planned to install this server as additional domain controller. Just before promoting the new Core Server into my test domain (Windows 2003), I was forced to run the adprep.exe utility to prepare the schema for the new server release. How to prepare Windows Server 2003 Active Directory for Windows Server 2008 DC? Copy the \Sources\adrep folder from the Windows Server 2008 dvd and logon to your AD schema domain controller Open CMD.exe prompt Locate the directory and run adprep.exe /forestprep Run adprep.exe /domainprep /gpprep after the forest prep has finished. Make sure your domain functional level is configured in Windows 2003 native mode. [DCInstall] ; Replica DC promotion ReplicaOrNewDomain=Replica ReplicaDomainDNSName=Networknet.nl SiteName=Site-Test InstallDNS=yes ConfirmGc=Yes DNSDelegation=No UserDomain=networknet.nl UserName=Administrator Password= DatabasePath=C:\Windows\NTDS LogPath=C:\Windows\NTDS SYSVOLPath=C:\Windows\SYSVOL ; Set SafeModeAdminPassword to the correct value prior to using the unattend file SafeModeAdminPassword= ; Run-time flags (optional) ; CriticalReplicationOnly=Yes ; RebootOnCompletion=Yes TransferIMRoleIfNecessary=No How to promote a Core Server into a domain controller role? Create new text file named ntds_dcpromo_newdc.txt and paste the example from above. Make sure to change the domain. Install DNS Server by running ocsetup DNS-Server-Core-Role dcpromo /unattend:ntds_dcpromo_newdc.txt The installation run smoothly and my new server run as planned.
